Castle Capers Safety Pack

What is a Safety Pack?

This Safety Pack is designed to give our hirers the information needed to ensure a safe and enjoyable hire experience. Anyone supervising or operating Castle Capers equipment must be properly trained and have adequate knowledge to ensure rider safety for the duration of the hire.

Upon setup, a printed Safety Sheet will be handed to the hirer. This contains the main rules for the specific equipment hired and must remain with the equipment or supervising adult throughout the hire.

Who Should Be Reading This?

The hirer (the person who organised or booked the hire equipment) must read this information. If the hirer will not be supervising the inflatable or hire equipment personally, they must ensure all designated supervisors have read and understood the contents of this Safety Pack, including any attached videos or documents.

Example:
Vacation Care Operators — if multiple staff will be supervising the equipment, each must have access to this document prior to the hire.

Terminology

  • Inflatable / Inflatable Device: A land-based amusement device such as jumping castles, obstacle courses, sports inflatables, etc.
  • Hire Equipment: Includes other items such as fairy floss machines, pedal karts, giant yard games, sumo suits, etc.
  • Unit: Refers to any inflatable or piece of hire equipment.
  • Safety Sheet: A printed yellow sheet containing the main rules for the individual units hired.

Contents

  1. General Inflatable Safety Rules (applies to all inflatables)
  2. Inspections of Amusement Devices (for multi-day hires)
  3. Weather and Amusements
  4. Specific Safety Rules (for all types of hire equipment)
  5. Emergency Procedures

General Inflatable Safety (All Inflatable Devices)

Castle Capers staff will not remain on site during the hire unless specifically arranged. For everyone’s safety, the following rules must be followed:

  • A responsible adult (18+) must supervise children at all times from no more than 1 metre from the equipment. This person must have read and understood the safety information in this pack.
  • Equipment must be used only for its intended purpose. For example, obstacle courses are designed to be run through — they are not jumping castles.
  • Riders must not jump, climb, or sit on side walls, entry/exit points, or netting. Entry and exit must remain clear at all times.
  • Riders must not exceed the height or weight limits listed on the Safety Sheet. If no sheet is visible, default limits are 60kg per rider and a maximum of 4 riders.
  • All inflatables have a manufacturer’s safety plaque. These rules must be followed at all times.
  • No riders with current or pre-existing injuries. Riders with severe physical or mental impairments may not use the equipment if it limits safe use or endangers others.
  • No shoes, food, drink, chewing gum, glasses, jewellery, hats, sharp objects, animals, water, choking hazards, or adults permitted on the inflatable.
  • No hot implements near the inflatable. No face paint, silly string, sand, or glitter on or around the equipment.
  • Riders must be of similar size and weight. Do not mix small and large children (e.g. a 20kg 5-year-old with a 60kg 9-year-old).
  • No fighting, rough play, flips, somersaults, or extreme horseplay.
  • Do not use the inflatable during storms, thunder, heavy rain, or high wind.
  • If the inflatable gets wet, cease use until the rain passes. Dry thoroughly before allowing riders back on.
  • Maximum wind speed for operation is 40km/h. If wind increases, evacuate immediately and turn off the blower. Use the Willy Weather app or BOM forecasts to monitor conditions.
  • Leave the inflatable fully inflated until collected. Do not move it from its installed position.

Additional Setup Notes

  • Ensure the inflatable, accessories, sandbags, and safety mats remain in their original installed positions.
  • For indoor hires, if the inflatable shifts position, cease use and contact Castle Capers immediately.
  • Do not allow use by anyone under the influence of drugs or alcohol, or by pregnant individuals.

Multiple Day Hires

This section applies to hires spanning more than one day. It outlines how to safely shut down and restart Castle Capers equipment for continued use.

Turning Off Inflatables

  1. Remove all patrons from the inflatable and check inside for any objects (e.g. socks, balls).
  2. Ensure no one is within 5 metres of the inflatable except the person turning it off.
  3. Switch off the blower; the inflatable will begin to deflate.
  4. As it deflates, gently fold it onto itself to prevent tipping.
  5. Turn off and unplug the blower from the power source.

Turning On Inflatables

  1. Ensure no one is within 5 metres of the inflatable during reinflation.
  2. Plug the cord into the power source and switch on.
  3. Turn the blower switch to ON; the inflatable will begin to inflate.
  4. Once fully inflated, confirm the unit is holding its shape and all sections are properly inflated.
  5. Complete the Daily Inspection Checklist below.

Daily Inspection Checklist

Before each use, inspect the equipment thoroughly:

  1. If outdoors, confirm wind speed is below 40km/h and there is no rain or storm activity.
  2. Ensure the inflatable is fully inflated with adequate pressure.
  3. Check that the blower hose is straight and securely attached.
  4. Confirm the blower air inlet is clear of obstructions.
  5. Ensure all cords and extensions are safely positioned and do not pose trip hazards.
  6. Verify that pegs or sandbags are in their original positions and anchoring the unit securely.
  7. Confirm safety mats are correctly placed at entry and exit points.
  8. Inspect the interior for hazards (e.g. loose Velcro, hairpins, debris).

Weather & Amusement Devices (Outdoor Hires Only)

Weather plays a critical role in inflatable safety. Castle Capers equipment must not be operated in high winds or significant rain. This applies to inflatables, pedal karts, mini golf, and any items with electrical components.

Heat

Castle Capers reserves the right to cancel bookings during extreme heat. As a general guide, bookings in temperatures exceeding 38°C will be assessed based on location, hire time, and sun exposure. PVC inflatables can become dangerously hot in full sun. We monitor forecasts and may adjust or cancel hires accordingly.

Rain

Inflatables and amusements must not be operated in rain. Wet vinyl becomes extremely slippery, increasing the risk of falls. Electrical components also pose a hazard when wet.
If rain occurs:

  • Remove all riders immediately.
  • Shut off the blower and unplug the unit.
  • Once the rain has passed, follow the Daily Inspection Checklist and dry all surfaces thoroughly.
  • Ensure all electrical components are dry before restarting.

Wind

Inflatables must not be operated in winds exceeding 40km/h.
Wind direction and gust speed can vary significantly, so regular monitoring is essential.
Castle Capers recommends using:

  • Willy Weather App (set to your location)
  • Bureau of Meteorology Detailed Forecasts

These tools provide real-time and hourly wind data to help you manage safety throughout the hire.

Emergency Procedures

In the event of an emergency, the following procedures must be carried out calmly and efficiently, without causing alarm.

Structural Collapse (Inflatable Deflation)

  1. Evacuate all patrons from the inflatable immediately. Use entry/exit points or roof exits if applicable.
  2. Assist patrons away from the bouncing area. If someone is on a slide, instruct them to descend calmly and exit.
  3. Confirm all patrons have exited the inflatable.
  4. Assemble patrons at a safe distance from the unit.
  5. Contact Castle Capers on 0401 083 333 to report the issue and request assistance.
  6. If caused by a power failure, do not allow patrons near the inflatable until it has been fully reinflated and tested by a trained operator.
  7. If the failure is due to another cause, Castle Capers will advise when and how it is safe to resume use.

Common causes include:

  • Blower unplugged or switched off (e.g. by a child)
  • Air inlet blocked
  • Extension cord dislodged
  • Blower or air hose moved, restricting airflow

Fire

  1. Evacuate all patrons from the inflatable or structure immediately.
  2. Confirm all patrons are clear and move them well away from the area.
  3. Switch off the electrical supply at the power point or switchboard.
  4. Call emergency services on 000.
  5. If safe to do so, attempt to control the fire until help arrives.
  6. Notify Castle Capers of the incident on 0417 479 630

Injury

Castle Capers must be notified of any incidents resulting in injury. Please provide details promptly so we can assist and document the event appropriately.
